Small Business Spotlight: SDK Cafe and Coffee

Welcome back to The Durham Team’s Small Business Spotlight! This week, we’re excited to introduce you to SDK Cafe and Coffee, a vibrant and community-driven cafe located at 2106 Jodeco Rd, McDonough, GA 30253. Opened just 2.5 months ago by the dynamic group of Susan and Kamal Dorsainville and Shacarra and Dwayne DeFreitas, SDK Cafe is already making waves in the local community.

A Dream Born from Necessity

When Susan and Kamal were building their event space, Events at 2120, they noticed a gap in the market. There was nowhere near their plaza at the time to grab a drink or a bite to eat. Seeing an opportunity, they decided to open SDK Cafe and Coffee. Their approach to building the menu is unique—they ask for customer input and even let them try different options before finalizing the menu items. Remarkably, half of the menu is based on customer suggestions, including popular items like matcha and pastrami sandwiches!

Customer Favorites and Unique Offerings

SDK Cafe and Coffee has quickly become a favorite spot for locals, offering up to 18 different flavors of syrups, homemade flavored cold foam, and a beloved Lox sandwich. They also offer New York-style bagels, which have gone viral in the area! These bagels are known for their unique water and flavor, including the eye-catching rainbow bagel with cranberry, cherries, and raisins, and the French toast bagel served with honey butter.

A Welcoming Atmosphere

With groovy music, free WiFi, and a cozy ambiance, SDK Cafe has become a haven for people from all walks of life. Whether you’re working on a degree, needing a break from the quiet of home, or just looking for a place to hang out, SDK Cafe provides a welcoming environment! The owners, often found at the cafe, ensure that each visit is exceptional. They love getting to know their customers, some of whom visit six days a week!

Coffee with a Personal Touch

Dwayne, a self-proclaimed “coffee nut,” takes pride in sourcing coffee for the cafe, with a majority of it being sourced locally from Georgia and carrying an essence of South America. Each month, they feature a Coffee of the Month from different regions, such as Ethiopia, Peru, Haiti, and Colombia. Their house blend, a favorite among customers, boasts undertones of chocolate, caramel, and nuts. They’re even considering roasting their own beans in the future!

Community and Growth

SDK Cafe and Coffee is not just about food and drinks; it’s about community. The cafe has hosted various events, including gatherings for the Moms of McDonough, chapter of the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, and Georgia pilot group. This Friday, 7/19, they’re hosting a “Coffee Mate” event, a fun twist on speed dating from 5:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. The Henry County Chamber of Commerce has been incredibly supportive, and the cafe has benefited greatly from the area’s development.

A Legacy of Creativity

Before venturing into the food business, the owners spent 25-30 years in marketing and production, working with major clients like KISS Products and promoting hair shows, photoshoots, movies, and commercials! This creative background has undoubtedly influenced their approach to running SDK Cafe and Coffee.

Join the SDK Family

SDK Cafe and Coffee is more than just a place to eat; it’s a community hub where everyone is welcome. As Kamal and Susan say, “We serve with love and make the food and drinks with love. Your satisfaction is our top priority, and every visit is an opportunity to delight your senses.”
